St Andrew’s Dementia-Specific Hostel has been designed specifically for people suffering early to moderate dementia / Alzheimer’s disease. The Dementia-Specific Hostel is divided into three houses; River House (8 beds), Lake House (14 beds) and Beach House (14 beds).

Our Dementia-Specific areas have been designed to provide a home-like atmosphere, whilst at the same time providing an environment that is considered safe and secure for residents. A modern purpose-built facility comprising 61 rooms with en-suite, dining rooms and activities rooms in each area, sitting rooms, elevated gardens, internal courtyards and safe walking paths.

The Dementia-Specific areas provide opportunities for residents to function to the best of their ability and maximise functional independence.  Care is based upon promoting the individual to benefit from access to a diversity of programs that provide challenge, satisfying daily routines and add variety to their life.  It is important to note that “doing for oneself” is not neglect of the resident, but an endeavour to provide therapeutic benefits.  Residents are encouraged to be involved in daily tasks, for example, chopping vegetables, etc. Continual risk assessment identifies those residents who require closer supervision and limitations with some activities.

Relatives are encouraged to participate in all levels of care, including social and physical.  Staff of the Dementia-Specific Hostel continue to require assistance from relatives in care delivery, and those residents who have family support benefit to a greater extent from all contexts.
